Jørgen Carling

Jørgen Carling

Jørgen is Research Professor in Migration and Transnationalism Studies at the Peace Research Institute Oslo. He holds a PhD in Human Geography from the University of Oslo. Jørgen's research has addressed a broad range of themes including migration theory, migrant smuggling, transnational families, migrant remittances, and the links between migration and development. Among his most influential work is the analysis of aspiration and ability in international migration, and the associated phenomenon of involuntary immobility. He has received a Consolidator Grant from the European Research Council for the project Future Migration as Present Fact (FUMI) which he leads alongside MIGNEX. Jørgen has been a Visiting Fellow at the University of Oxford, the National University of Singapore, and the University of Maastricht.

Jørgen’s responsibilities within MIGNEX include scientific leadership of the project overall, leadership of Work Package 2: Synchronization (maximizing complementarities between methodologies), leadership of Work Package 6: Causes (understanding how development processes affect migration), qualitative data collection in Cabo Verde, and strategic coordination and monitoring of impact achievement.
