Heleen holds a BSc in Psychology from Maastricht University, a MSc in Victimology from Tilburg University and has further specialized in Migration Studies at the United Nations University-Maastricht University (all based in The Netherlands). At the same time, she volunteered in a refugee centre, working with displaced children residing in the centre. After graduating in 2018, she has worked on various research projects on the topic of migration and displacement, mainly focused on the Horn of Africa and the Middle East. She has worked mostly at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) University of London, but also at University College London (UCL) and NGO the Institute on Statelessness and Inclusion prior to joining Samuel Hall.
